Summary

What I think it means to be an American is that no one can tell you what to do with your life. You get to choose what you you want to do or be in life. So, what do you think it means to be an American?

“The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive and passion, it's possible to achieve the American dream.” - Tommy Hilfiger. What do I believe it means to be an American? I think it means you have the choice to do what you want to do; likewise, others can’t tell you what to do.

First of all, I think it means that you have the freedom to do whatever your heart’s desire is. You can be whatever you want to be when you grow up. For example, you can be an architect, an accountant, maybe even a restaurant employee. The point is, you can do whatever you want to do.

What I also think it means is that no one can influence or decide what you want to do with your life. They can’t tell you how to live your life. They can’t force you to work in the family business, unless you want to. They can’t tell you, “Hey, you have to become a construction worker.” You don’t have to. You can choose.

Lastly, I think it means that it doesn’t matter where you came from, it matters where you are going. That people can’t judge you for what color you are or where you lived before you came to America. For example, if you are African American,Chinese, or German, people have no right to tell you that you can’t do this, or you can’t do that, or you can only do this. You choose, no matter what anyone else says. They cannot tell you what to do.

In conclusion, others cannot tell you what to do with your life, which means you can make that decision yourself. No one has the right to tell you what to do, only you have the right to tell you what to do with your life. Embrace your own future, don’t embrace someone else’s future. So, what do you think it means to be an American?
