Summary

This essay is a discription of my American Dream and how the American Dream is broad enough for everyone to chase their own indivisual dream.

The American Dream is rooted in the Declaration of Independence, which states that all men are created equal with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The idea of the American Dream is broad enough for everyone to form their own individual dreams based on the ideals from the declaration. My American Dream as a young black male is to become a successful medical doctor, graduate with no student loan debt, and raise a family while giving back to the one I came from. That is my pursuit of happiness.

There are very few black male medical doctors in America, but since the American Dream states that all men are created equal, then I have the same right as any other man to become a medical doctor. In order for me reach this point I would have to excel in the high school classroom and in extracurriculars to not only get accept into college, but to also have scholarship money because my family cannot afford college tuition for four years. After getting accepted into undergraduate school, I will have to do exceptionally well in my core classes and score well on the MCAT in order to have a strong medical school application. After completing my four years in undergrad I will then spend the next four years in medical school. The eight years of postsecondary education is a long journey, but based on the American Dream I am capable of pursuing this journey and whether I make it or not should be up to me and my will to succeed.

I came from a strong family who raised me to be the person I am today. Being raised by such a strong family inspires me to raise a family as well. According to the American Dream, nothing is restricting me from doing so. Since I was raised by such a great family I feel like it’s my obligation to pay it forward to my own kids.

The American Dream gives Americans, including myself, a sense of hope that keeps them pushing towards their goals. This is a good thing. People need to remember that the American Dream is still just a Dream and that not all dreams come true but that shouldn’t keep you from working toward them. Just because I might not be able to graduate debt free or even get accepted into medical school doesn’t mean I shouldn’t give it my best try.

America as a country isn’t perfect and everyone doesn’t have the same right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, so you could say that America is chasing the American Dream just as we are and we should respect that.
