My "This I Believe" essay on what America is to me

I believe that America is a special place that I’m lucky enough to be born and raised here.

My grandparents are immigrants and tell stories of Thailand and Laos, stories of hardship, child labor, and of course stories about the countries' beauty, but they have a lot more poverty stricken areas than America. America is the place of dreams and easy life.

To provide money for support some families do have to go through and do child labor.

The fact that there is still child labor is sad, and there’s still overworked children in other countries really sucks. America is the land of dreams and some people are foaming at the mouth because America seems like a very great place.

I believe that America is a place where all different types of people unite. And since we’re united it doesn’t matter where you are from.

Our country’s openness is what makes us so different and amazing, but is also what kind of makes us vulnerable and if bad things happen like war then this country won’t be that great any more. But if we do get into war, another thing I like about this country is that people are willing to fight for it. And fighting for this country is not forced upon people.

I finally realised how good I had it here when my grandparents told stories and when a teacher showed my class a video about third world countries. I always thought my life was “hard”. I also feel towards the attitude for America, some people think America is “where people have no discipline” or “where people go to be crazy/free”. But obviously (mostly) that’s not the case. Across the world or other countries there is definitely a difference.

As General Colin Powell said “An America that is still the beacon of light the darkest corner of the world.”I take this quote as an example of how people in America should accept other people from different countries. I think it’s tear jerking to see someone excluded from things. So why do some people do that in America?
