Summary

If the threat of mass shootings is a constant one, then what does that say about America itself? Is America really safe with this looming over us?

Mass shootings have never been a more prominent threat to the world until recently. The school shootings are especially important for me to represent being that I myself am a student. As I walk into school every morning I prepare myself for the possibility that my school may become another name on the list of recent shootings and that my name or one of my sisters, or even friends name might end up being in the news as a death or a person who got hurt. I think that extra precautionary measures should be taken to ensure the safety of the students and the general population. There is a real threat to the public because mass shootings happen in a public place and not a secluded area. That means that nowhere is safe and a good time can turn into a massacre.

The mass shootings are a danger to everyone’s safety again and again they continue to be an ever present threat to anyone that could be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A prime example is in 2003 when Doug Williams opened fire on his job at the plant in meridian and killed 7 people and injured 14 before finally taking his own life. This is not the only occurrence there are many similar shooting sprees that happened recently such as the Las Vegas shooting on October 1, 2017 where a sixty-four year old male named Stephen Paddock opened fire at a concert crowd that had over 22,000 in a casino and the shooting that happened at youtube headquarters where three were injured and the shooter who was identified as a youtuber named Nasim Najafi Aghdam later took her own life while still in the youtube headquarters. Stephen paddock killed fifty eight people and injured almost five hundred people. He did this within 10 to 15 minutes, that means he killed 58 people before police could even respond and help. The danger with mass shootings is that the person can have an assortment of weapons that could kill so many people before anyone could realize. This situation happened at the Boston marathon where two men exploded a homemade bomb which killed and injured many people.

The school shootings I mentioned in the first paragraph are the most recent types of mass shootings that are becoming more of an recurrent outbreak to the point where I consider them to be an epidemic. The most recent school shooting was at a high school named Great Mills it is located in Maryland it occurred on March 22, 2018. The gunman was a 17 year old male and he shot at his ex-girlfriend who had to be rushed to the hospital and days later was pronounced brain dead and was then taken off of life support. Did you know that there has been 18 school shootings since January first? That means that there is roughly 3 shootings per week. In conclusion I think that these mass shootings are becoming a horrifying threat that is more and more prominent to the public by each day and is growing to be a crisis that we no longer can ignore and send thoughts and prayers to try to solve the problem. It does not work that way we must band together to stomp out this threat to the people.
