At a recent interview at the CASA building in McCook, Nebraska, Caitlain, a dedicated advocate with a deep commitment to child welfare, vividly illustrated the profound impact CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteers have on the lives of foster children. Caitlain recounted her journey, deeply inspired by a family legacy of service. “This is my mom Kathy McDowell. She was the previous director," Caitlain shared passionately. This upbringing ignited Caitlain's path in public administration. Eventually, it led her to volunteer coordination, where she witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of CASA volunteers on the lives of children in foster care. In addition, Catlain loved entrepreneurship and found that making jobs and doing activities suited her well.

CASA volunteers undergo rigorous training, including specialized education on trauma, addiction, and self-care, equipping them to navigate the complexities of the child welfare system with sensitivity and expertise. Their responsibilities range from attending court hearings to monitoring parental progress and providing detailed reports to judges on the well-being and needs of the children they advocate for.

"Volunteers like Caitlain serve as crucial voices for these children, ensuring their perspectives are heard and their best interests are prioritized," I reiterated from the CASA Plains Web page. Caitlain shared a wonderful story of an advocate’s impact (for privacy reasons names will be excluded), “One of my volunteers was on a case about five years ago, recently the young lady had run into some trouble. She was put back with her mom which is considered successful. About two months ago, she was traveling to Lincoln with her mom, and her mom just left her there. The young lady still knew the CASA volunteer's number and called my volunteer to ask her what to do. So how that is a success story is that through life, right when life happens to you, do you remember anyone's number from four years ago? Right? So that's the kind of impact that this volunteer had on this young lady that after four or five years not speaking to each other. She knew in a crisis that she could depend on my volunteer and ask her for help that she would provide.” I then asked what happened afterward and Catlian responded,” She went to the other CASA program in Lincoln and we were able to kind of work with them and get her on a train back home. Yeah, so I think that's huge, not a lot of people see that as a success. But I think that remembering a phone number is crazy. That's a person that you could count on like my volunteer's face and number popped up into her head when she felt unsafe and didn't know what to do. That's huge!”

This is an incredible story that illustrates the persistent impact a volunteer can have on a young person's life. Even years later, the young lady remembered the advocate's number and felt comfortable reaching out in a moment of distress. This demonstrates the profound difference that a supportive and caring mentor can make in a young person's life. This is why it is so important for people to volunteer. Despite their pivotal role, CASA programs often need help in securing sufficient funding to sustain their operations. However, recent community-driven events, such as one with 13 registered teams, highlight the growing local support and engagement with CASA's mission.

"We are constantly exploring innovative strategies to raise awareness and secure funds," Caitlain explained earnestly. "Collaborations with local schools and community organizations are critical in expanding our reach and recruiting dedicated volunteers".

Accessed 6 July 2024 states, “There are currently 22 Nebraska CASA programs serving 36 counties.” CASA is in need of volunteers, caseworkers working, and therapists. McCook currently has only four caseworkers, one caseworker alone handles nineteen children. Caitlain continues to recruit more volunteers and spread awareness of CASA’s role. She stated in a text, “My program covers Red Willow, Chase, Dundy, Hitchcock, Frontier, Furnas, and Hayes Counties. I have 16 volunteers and we serve on average 35 to 45 children a year.”
