Summary

Mental health in schools should be a priority, Anxiety, depression, and personal issues at home can make it difficult to stay on top of academic work and concentration inside of the classroom. All schools should have sources in place to make students feel heard and understood. Specifically in West Clermont.

Mental Health inside schools has become an increasingly important topic world wide as most students face various pressure related to academics, social dynamics, and personal issues at home. Many students experience anxiety, depression, and stress which can significantly affect their well-being and academic focus.

Helpful Counselling

To prevent these problems, West Clermont created supportive environments that prioritize mental health by offering optional appointments which allow the students to vent, ask for advice, and have trustful resources which insure their information will be kept private, unless someone's safety is at risk. Students can schedule appointments using schoology messages, or email, some students even bring friends along to the appointments for support. Research has shown that even though most students' situations are different, if the students are not allowed an environment where they feel comfortable, learning becomes a more difficult thing. By granting students coping strategies, and access to professional help schools can play an important role in ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive both academically and emotionally.

Impact on students

As a result of these actions, students' mental health has seen significant improvements. Counselors provide a safe space for students to express their feelings, and concerns which helps reduce the feeling of isolation. After asking students they respond with “The mental health support I've gotten has made an incredible impact on my grades, and anxiety. The teachers and counselors make me feel very safe and heard.” Not only this, but schools in the district have seen improvements in attendance, academic performance, and overall student happiness showcasing the importance of prioritizing mental health in educational settings.
