Sovereignty: The Backbones of Our Community

The importance of women in our culture and in my life

By Nariah Kallestewa from Zuni High School in New Mexico

The women in our matriarchal community are strong and resilient. They are the bearers of our children, the care takers of our families, and our aunty's, grandmas, and wives. Since time immemorial, the women in our communty have always been in charge of preparing our traditional meals during cultural events, and taking care of the men who participate in religious events and who ask for blessings for our people. Growing up I was mostly raised by my mom, aunty's and grandmas who I have always seen as hardworking and independent. Throughout my life, they have taught me the importance of my role as a young woman in my family and community. I am very grateful for the women in my life, all their teachings, and for shaping me  into the young woman I am now.
