What is Democracy?

What is Democracy to me?

By Hailey W. from Williamson High School in Pennsylvania

This picture represents democracy to me because it displays the freedom of speech and expression. People are allowed to display their own opinions and display symbols that represent certain ideas. I think this picture embodies the positives of democracy because it is a peaceful display of protest and activism. It is important for people to be able to express themselves and their own opinions. While free speech can have some downsides, I think this is an example of one of the best parts of free speech because it is thought-provoking for all the people that see it. People can inspire action in others and incite change in government with their own actions. The citizens are able to impact their government and prioritize the issues that they feel deserve the most attention. People are able to make statements that aren't offensive and inspire activism.
