Democracy

What is Democracy?

By Gracie S. from Williamson High School in Pennsylvania

Traditional Democracy has different branches of government. For example, here in the United States we have a democracy with three branches. Our first branch is the legislative branch. The legislative branch is composed of the house and senate. This branch has the power to make all laws, declare war, regulate interstate and foreign commerce, and control taxing. The second branch is the executive branch, which consists of the President, his or her advisors, and various departments. This branch is responsible for enforcing the laws of the land. The third and final branch is the judicial branch, this consists of the U.S. Supreme Court and the Federal Judicial Center. This branch is in charge of deciding the meaning of the law, how to apply them to real situations, and whether a law breaks the rules of the constitution. Unlike the United States, China has one branch that has control over all the other branches. This branch is called National People’s Congress or NPC. The United States makes sure one branch does not have more power than another branch because we want to make it fair. However, China's one branch has power over the others which makes it unfair in my opinion. So, to me having branches is a true sign of a democracy.
