Our Democracy

In this post I talked about what democracy means to me.

By Elias L. from Eureka High School in California

Democracy means giving people choices and letting them make their own decisions. You can try to influence their decisions but ultimately it should be them who make the decisions. Democracy also means accepting people for who they are. They are given the choice to be the person who they want and people should accept them for it. People should have the right to be who they want to be.

This photo represents democracy to me because it shows that not accepting people for who they are is not tolerated. People are given the choice to choose who they want to be and they should not be hated for it. Democracy is having the public choose who to elect into the presidential office, but it is also much more than that. Social Justice also ties in with democracy. Social Justice is giving people the choice to be who they are.

Our Democracy

The Our Democracy Education Project is a partnership with the National Writing Project and PhotoWings. PhotoWings' mission is to help photography to be better understood, created, utilized, seen, and saved. The project is also supported by the National Geographic Society and Catchlight, and explores the question, “What does democracy look like?” through the creation of a multimedia record of the state of local, everyday democracy today.
