The book ¨Accountable¨, by Daska Slater¨ revolves around a racist Instagram account that was created by a group of High School students in the city of Albany, CA. This incident happened on March 20, 2017.This affected many high school students, especially those who posted it, followed it and were targeted by it. Social Media encourages people to post racist things and memes of people without them doing anything about it. These racist posts are supposed to be private but Instragram allowed it to be easily shared and eventually the posts became public. Social media should be responsible for hate speech because it emotionally hurts people.

Social Media encourages people to post racist things and memes of people without them doing anything about it. These racist posts are supposed to be private but eventually become public. To begin, Charles created an account to make people laugh and to get attention.¨ Charles did not think too deeply about the morality of that kind of thing ¨(page 39). He thinks that putting racist pictures would not affect the person. It would just make people laugh.He did not realize how easily his posts could be shared.¨ What mattered was that these memes made his friends laugh and their laughter was a shot of pleasure and power and affirmation and love¨(page 39). The more attention he got was his motivation. He wanted to keep posting and it kept getting worse and worse. Charles wanted and people laughed.Social Media should be responsible for hate speech because it emotionally hurts people.

Charles hurts Andrea by putting racist pictures of her. Instagram should be aware of what people post. For example,¨Andrea was sobbing but also furious¨(page 55). Instagram is responsible because of how they did not take it down when it was very racist and these posts can hurt post people.¨ She slammed her fist into one of the murals smiling faces¨(page 55). Andrea lost her temper. This shows how social media can make you feel a type of way. Charles didn´t think or care if Andrea would be hurt.

Social Media should be responsible for racist posts. They allowed it because of how they let this post be on the internet for a good amount of time and they didn't try to take it down. Social Media should also be responsible because of how these posts can emotionally hurt people. We learned so much on how social media can be used. It can be used in a good or bad way. In this case it was used in a bad way and this shows how we have to be careful on how we use social media.Given what we learned in Albany high school it shows that we as a school should make rules on how we use social media like post,comments,ect.
