Sleeping Problems in Youth

Students who struggle with sleeping are more likely to develop mental health problems.

Students that are lacking in sleeping are more likely to have stress, anxiety or even depression. All of these problems and many more are the cause of losing sleep. Many young students are stressing about school, their personal life, and their family problems. Like now I am currently stressing about this essay to the point where I am losing my precious beauty sleep. Students are still growing and developing their bodies while trying to balance things.

Sleeping is an important part of helping your bodies grow not just your bodies but your mind too. According to AASM, American Academy of Sleep Medicine it states ¨Lack of sleep can be caused by, and contribute to, mental health problems.¨(paragraph, 3). Mental health is very important because it can be a major problem for your health. So the more students are lacking in sleep the more problems it will create.

While trying to balance things many students develop stress, and stress can create a lot of problems. It can affect your physical health and mental health. According to an article by Alisa Paliano, found on stress.org, it states ¨Too much stress can cause you to have a bad sleep, leading to mental and physical health issues which can, in turn, cause stress in daily life, leading to poor sleep at night¨(June 12, 2018). Stress can be the cause of losing sleep, and losing sleep can be the cause of a mental illness. A lot of people who are stressed tend to overthink a lot, causing a lot more problems.

Just like stress overthinking is a major thing that is keeping students up. Overthinking focuses on the negative sides of things, which leads to insomnia and anxiety. Insomnia is a sleeping disorder. According to Sleepstation.org it states that ¨Insomnia and overthinking often go hand-in-hand. So people with insomnia will commonly try to shut out thoughts that are stopping them from sleeping.¨ People who overthink a lot can cause insomnia which makes it harder to sleep.

Some ways to help fall asleep every night is to meditate, relax, treat yourself by taking a warm bath or shower, watch a movie, or doing a quiet activity. If you still have trouble falling asleep try to stick to a sleeping schedule. Try to stay awake during the day, and have a bedtime routine. An average young adult needs 7 or more hours of sleep per night. If you are still lacking sleep then get professional help, there is meditation to help. The best thing to get back your sleep schedule is taking care of yourself.

There is a correlation between your mental health and the lack of sleep. Mental health tends to cause insomnia and insomnia tends to cause mental health problems. According to an article made by Claudia Hammond posted on BBC she said that ¨problems with sleeping might start before the depression, raising the risk of mental health problems in the future.¨ ( March, 2021). So the problem with sleeping may start with your mental health. Likewise, if you take care of one, you also help take care of the other.
