Batavia, Ohio, a small village with a lot of history in Clermont County,a lot of the development would go to George Ely, its founder. While not a lot is documented about Ely’s life, his help to the establishment of Batavia made a good foundation for a good community that remains good today. His outlook for a good settlement in the early 19th century helped the village grow in structure, and significance.
George Ely played an important role in establishing Batavia in 1814. At the time, Ohio was still a developing perimeter, attracting settlers wanting a new opportunity. Ely, noticing the land along the East Fork of the Little Miami River, took long steps to plan and organize the village. The fertile soil and working waterways made Batavia a good location for settlement, business, and agriculture.

George Ely also played a role in giving a sense of community for the early settlers. By promoting good engagement and encouraging the establishment of businesses, Ely ensured that Batavia would do good . He made the place better and brought the community together. The village became a good source of economic and government, eventually leading to its official incorporation in 1842.
