Summary

"Democracy is the recognition that we are all equal and the power to remind ourselves of that when it is forgotten." This post about "Our Democracy" describes my definition of democracy.

“Sometimes it’s the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine.” This quote, from the 2014 film The Imitation Game, brilliantly encapsulates what democracy means to me. Democracy, within a community, is the understanding that every single individual has an opinion, gets a voice, and can make an impact. I think that democracy is the concept that there is strength in numbers and in variety. Democracy is the recognition that we are all equal and the power to remind ourselves of that when it is forgotten.

This photograph, with a focus on the dawning sky, represents democracy to me. The sky is colored with shades of blue, of purple, of pink and orange. Together, these colors form a beautiful sky with the promises of hope and opportunity. If you take away the pink, you take away the hope. Take away the orange, a loss of opportunity. The colors, like individuals in a democracy, work together to create something beautiful.
