Our Democracy

Democracy is a people, not a government.

By Brook B. from Eureka High School in California

Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter said, “In a democracy, the highest office is the office of citizen.” We are the highest office in the government. What we think, what, and who we vote for, matters the most. I chose this photo because it shows that people can come together in peace. This picture shows that we will protect each other and ourselves from the government that tries to cut us out of the picture.

Democracy isn’t something you can touch. It’s not an object, it is a people. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “The government is us; we are the government, you and I.” I agree with him because I believe that the people- the citizens are the most important thing to humankind. Sure we need some help governing sometimes, but the big political people were us once. If the ¨superior beings¨ in the fancy buildings get a say in what happens to the people, the people should too. After all, that is all that we are.

Our Democracy

The Our Democracy Education Project is a partnership with the National Writing Project and PhotoWings. PhotoWings' mission is to help photography to be better understood, created, utilized, seen, and saved. The project is also supported by the National Geographic Society and Catchlight, and explores the question, “What does democracy look like?” through the creation of a multimedia record of the state of local, everyday democracy today.
