Summary

I wrote this essay to help explain that we should all be equal in America and be accepting of each other.

We’re all people, and we should be treated like it. This, I believe. When I was younger, there was no discrimination or difference. We all just got along as friends. Now that I'm older, I see that the world isn't all just cupcakes and rainbows. I see that the world is a harsh place, where people aren’t always treated like people. But, I also see that it doesn't have to be that way.

Walking the halls, or even down the street from my house, I see people getting hate, for many different reasons. Whether it's the color of their skin, the way they dress, or what they believe in, people always get hate. It doesn't make sense to me. When this country was first founded Thomas Jefferson wrote: “...All men are created equal…” Equality is something our country was founded on, yet we still discriminate against anything we can. We judge people for the smallest things. Confused, I question if we are concerned with meeting the standards set for us when this country was founded.

Even though people often talk about how they wish we were more accepting, more kind to one another, I see no one doing anything to fix the problems. I’m no better myself. I still judge people for little things, like how they look or what they wear all the time. I know that, and I am trying to fix it. I am trying to treat everyone I meet as an equal. I try to smile and compliment everyone I see by saying nice things about their hair or shoes.

In my mind, young and learning, I am trying value the unique qualities in people, as well as recognise what we all have in common. I try to think about what makes them a person, and that includes the feelings they have. We’re all people and should be treated like it. I think that other people should try it. It feels nice to go home and know that I made someone feel better. I want to try to make this world a better place, one person at a time. It may take me a while, but hopefully I can help this place a little better

It doesn't take much for people to help out. We just have to be kind. It’s not that hard. I know that you may not like someone, everyone has at least one person they don't like, but we have no clue what they go through, we don't know what effect a simple smile and a polite hello has on people. As people, we think that we are better than everyone else, but really, we’re all the same. It shouldn't matter what we look like, or what we wear, all that matters is that we’re people, and are all the same in one way or another. Hopefully, I will be able to help make a place where it’s all cupcakes and rainbows.
