Summary

Nikki Grimes poem "Autumn Evening" visual poetry analysis

The title means the mother’s grief or sorrow. This can be further guaranteed when the story becomes about slavery and becoming equal after being shipped off from their own to slavery. “Ancestral blood waters the cotton fields.” This metaphor is saying that the blood of their ancestors who fought to not be brought into slavery became a failure. As they were trying not to be shipped off they resisted even if it came down to killing their own. This ended as the blood being shed for no reason because even after the deaths and bloodshed they were still in the fields of cotton. This poem uses imagery. This is shown when they describe the story and put detail into it. This makes the visual picture more vivid. ABCDEF. The themes are sacrifice and equality.
