The book, Accountable by is about a racist instagram account by a high school student and how it affected the student boyd, especially the ones who were targeted posted on at racist account. This happened in Albany, a small town next to Berkeley, California in 2017 It's been 7 years but the impact remains to this day.Systemic racism contributes to incidents like the one in Albany High School because this type of situation doesn't only happen in one highschool but more. These problems tend to happen a lot and they are being normalized everyday and the people being affected have to deal with it and suck it up. In the book there was a friend group and it was diverse but one of them created a racist

account and his name was Charles, he started making racist jokes and posting his friends

captioning them with ignorant comments mostly with his black friends. I personally feel

there shouldn't have been a reason for Charles to make that account, especially when he is POC too. It involves systemic racism because charles when he makes the account he, he

involves cyber bullying and harassment to his friends.

Systemic racism is involved in Albany high school because of this exact problem. Albany in 2017 was known for having a racist account owned by a student there, but Albany High school is not the only one that has gone through this type of problem. Many other schools have dealt with this issue but it wasn't as big. WIth that being said students in each different school being racist or making fun of each other for skin color or where they come from is being normalized and it's a big issue not a lot of schools talk about

“People keep joking that you're an oreo or a burnt cracker

Or black-and-white cow, or some other two-toned thing because somehow your way of being black doesn't fit their definition”. (pg 21)

The reason racism is being normalized is because it is encouraged by the people of who you hang around with or it can even involve your family.i feel like by who charles hung around with had encouraged to make that account for laughs and validation from his friends, In albany highschool alot of ignorant comments were being said and no one said a word not even the teachers they can also ignore the comment or pretend like it's normal. Racism goes for everyone but especially black students who have suffered the most

“ Your favorite teacher asks you to tell the class what your hair does underwater… you tell him that question makes you uncomfortable… he changes the subject by saying to the class did you know black people don't get lice”( pg 20)

This quote goes and shows how ignorant and racism was normalized in Albany. The racism mostly was targeted to black students with disturbing comments about their hair or how they look.

Systemic racism is a huge problem because it is everywhere and everyone gets affected by it for example with the laws, policies, system etc.. It is an unfair treatment against people of color. We should be able to live in a world where racism should not exist but it is not possible because of how others get treated or some people just don't listen.

The account when it was discovered and people had found out who made it, it was very emotional, uncomfortable, and it caused a lot of stress and mixed emotions.

The account affected the people who were targeted emotionally because they were uncomfortable and afraid because they didn't know how to deal with it and were scared of what people might have to say. “ Which one one of these people might have known ? Which one of them might be taking your picture right now ? by now your heart will be stampeding in your chest and you will have the urge to run out of the room” ( pg 121) this quote explains how the targeted people of the account might be feeling because they don't know what to do but keep going and try to pass the issue.

One page 125 andrea mets up with wyatt because he was one of the people who had been one of the followers of that account and knew it was wrong but never reported it, Andrea was feeling angry, disappointed and hurt she was telling him why wasn't he the person to report it, she told him the least he could have done was follow the account but he didnt she felt so hurt and betrayed because she would have never let watt go through that. “Her body was too small for all the feelings packed inside it anger, disappointment, grief and hurt. ( pg 125).

Everyone got hurt it didn't matter who but everyone did and even after the problem was over nothing was the same again that group of friends could not be friends because of how big was the issue and how people felt betrayed, this goes on to show how one small account can cause a huge problem and affect people mentally
