Summary

Our soccer team shows democracy, the coming together of a group of people, all equal, one team, with different backgrounds, different opinions, different education, yet one community.

Democracy to me is everyone coming together as one and playing their own role to make all the decisions that have affected our community to this day. Everyone comes from a different background and culture with different beliefs and opinions. These opinions and beliefs shape our outlook on what decisions should be made and it is interesting to see what kinds of people gravitate towards certain decisions. Theodore Parker once said “Democracy means not ‘I am as good as you are,’ but ‘You are as good as I am.” This means that in a democracy one is not held higher than another, everyone is equal and all votes account for the same importance.

Having a voice is an important thing and democracy helps that voice be heard. That is why I chose a picture of my soccer team huddled up before a game, This picture shows the coming together of a group of people, all equal, one team, with different backgrounds, different opinions, different education, yet one community. Education is important for everyone in a democracy so educated and informed decisions can be made. I chose my soccer team to represent democracy because not only are they an example of a community but they are their own democracy in some way. We take votes, make important decisions, elect captains and leaders and I think it is going to be useful when I need to make “real world decisions.” Being on a team has taught me how to be a good team player, make educated decisions, and speak out on what I think is important. I believe that joining a club or team when you are young can help you play your role in democracy later on.
