Summary

In this reading it explains specific dates of events of black history and African-American freedom. Also explains each event to understand what has happened and why it may or not be a problem. Concluding with my own opinion and personal thoughts.

February 26,2012-Trayvon Martin Shooting

“George Zimmerman fatally shot Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African-American high school student. Zimmerman was the neighborhood watch coordinator for his gated community where Martin was visiting his relatives at the time of the shooting. Zimmerman shot Martin, who was unarmed, during a physical altercation between the two. Zimmerman, injured during the encounter, claimed self-defense in the confrontation”. This incident was full of rumors that may or may not be true. But the most accurate one was that Trayvon Martin unarmed was accused of being suspicious by George Zimmerman and they got into an altercation and George claimed Trayvon was armed and shot Trayvon. To me this was an unreasonable action on George’s end because he could have simply carried on with his day instead of picking on a young african-american boy. When George went to court he argued that Trayvon was armed and expected to win because Trayvon was black and because of African Americans background and judgements.

February 3,1956-Suspending Lucy

“Autherine Juanita Lucy was the first African-American student to attend the University of Alabama. Her expulsion from the institution led to the university's President Oliver Carmichael's resignation. Years later, the university let her enter as a master's student, and monuments honor the sacrifice that she made.” Lucy was suspended because of “safety concerns” after white students and residents riot in protest. This suspension was racist itself because Lucy didn’t do anything but go to class and the white students are the people who are acting up and causing problems, but yet Lucy gets suspended. The students who were causing problems should have been suspended not Lucy.

February 16,1847-Missouri

“The legislature of Missouri passed an act that prohibited “Negroes and mulattoes” from learning to read and write and assembling freely for worship services”. This act of prohibition in my opinion is uncalled for. Mostly everyone during this time weren’t educated and wanted to be educated regardless of where or who they are around. To prohibit education is giving themselves a reputation because then people will look at Missouri as a place where “Negroes and Mulattoes” don’t know how to read or write which may cause them to be a target. The people aren’t worried about the criticism that comes along with the education they want to be educated to be different and make themselves less vulnerable.

February 23,1965-Malcolm X

On this day states in “ A History of Racial Injustice”. “Mourners begin visiting Harlem funeral home to view the body of assassinated black activist Malcolm X ; over the next five days, thousands pay their respects”. This is a day a great black activist leader was killed in cold blood but not in vein but loved by thousands of people who paid their respects to him.

February 6,1902-Thomas Brown

It was confirmed that “A mob of 200 white people seizes a 19 year old black man, Thomas Brown from jail and lynched him on the courthouse lawn after he is accused of assaulting in Nicholasville, Kentucky”. This simplifies the violence and aggression towards African-Americans.

This all explains black people history and issues. The calendar above shows many events that happened on specific dates throughout the month. I chose 5 that meant something to me and that spoke the reasons why I chose this topic. Which was because racism is important to remember so that you can protect yourself today and for you to know your worth as and African-American.
