Impact of Immigration
Summary
Immigration is a topic that relates to my family and our heritage in major ways. My grandma, a second generation Irish American, had four grandparents who were born in Ireland. All four of these grandparents immigrated to America before my grandma was born and they all made it to America. Knowing these grandparents immigrated to America to have a better life shows their fight for rights, their own ideas of making a difference in the world, how they provided a different background and meaning of American Creed for my family, and ultimately how they were inspirations to the future of America in my family specifically and to everyone living in the U.S. in the present and past.
Based on what my grandma heard from the one grandparent of hers that was still alive when she was born and growing up is a story that truly describes the American Creed of someone who wanted to come to America for a new and better life. The American Creed relating to my family was four people from Ireland who wanted to fight and achieve better rights for themselves and come to the “Land of the Free”. When talking about immigration it is rooted in the fact that people coming from foreign areas want a better life and are attempting to achieve this through moving.
Having people in my family who immigrated to America and have this influence on my family shows the American Creed in my family. Being able to have diverse people in my family from different backgrounds gives my family the ability to have various viewpoints of knowledge and contribute to the ideal of being an American in multiple ways. What immigrants and Americans of the past have gone through is very different than what goes on in modern America so it is interesting to see how true ideals of an American change when their surroundings change. Being from Ireland is different from coming from any other country so this gives them a different background than other people striving to be an American.
It is so special to be able to have people who lived before me who rooted their immigration and attitudes in tradition and success because they knew there was more in store for them. Not only did I have these four Ireland immigrants, but both of my immediate Grandpa’s served in World War II. I look up to these relatives who fought for the country I live in today because it makes me realize that if you try really hard you can make a change or a difference in the world.
Being an American is a privilege and to become a citizen of this country is not easy especially at the time of people immigrating from so many different places. Aside from all of the evil and violence that is in America, we are a country where people want to come to start over and live a better life and it is evident.
The achievements of several of my family members and the American Creed they have shaped for my family today exemplifies the effort and dedication it takes to be an American.
