My American Creed
The best way someone can truly express what the American Creed means to them, is by taking action to bring people together and supporting your community by expressing and advocating what you believe is best for the nation.
The American Creed is about the values that shape who we are as the United States of America. Freedom, opportunity, and equality. These are the principles that Americans hold to be true, but they are meaningless unless we do something with them. Taking action shows that you care about our country and the people who live in it. Just saying that you believe in something is not enough, you have to live it out and advocate for it.
For example, in this article with Joe Maddon, he saw that people in his town didn’t know one another, so he started the Hazelton Integration Project. He used sports and other programs to help young people in his community connect with one another. This is a prime example of someone showing what they believe in, by giving others a chance to feel welcomed and supported.
Another wonderful example of people expressing their beliefs is Eric Liu, who created the Sworn Again project to help people feel more connected to citizenship. He is encouraging people to care about their rights and responsibilities as an American Citizen. Eric took action by helping them understand just how important it is to be involved. This is a large part of the American creed too, being an active citizen, and not just someone who lives here.
In the end, taking action is what brings the American Creed to life. Whether that means creating a program in your community to encourage a sense of togetherness, encouraging people to vote, or even just going out and helping some neighbors, it all matters. Our beliefs only become real when we use them to make things better for others.
