The Dark Shadows of Social Media

The way the Instagram account spreaded is another point as to how social media plays a big role in the book Accountable. Even though Charles had made this account only for his friends to see and set the account in private to be sure of it, the rumor of what this account was saying spreaded out very quickly. Soon one student was passing it on to the other student and the other student ended up passing it on too. Many would just keep following this private account. This was when the girls who were victims of the jokes being made, had found out what was going on. They started talking amongst each other and wondered why this was being done and who was behind it all. They of course also had to tell the girl, Andrea, who was being mentioned in this account . “ There’s a racist Instagram account, they told her. A ton of people are following it. And there are pictures of you on it. The hallway walls were covered with murals of giant faces, all of which seemed to be staring at her” (54). This demonstrates how most of the school already knew about the account and that some of the jokes were about Andrea. The way it spreaded out little by little had an impact on the knowledge of what was really going on.
