What it Means to be American

A poem written about what it means to be an American and how our ancestors actions have shaped our country into what it is today.

By Yasmeen from Gerstell Academy in Maryland

“For Which We Stand”

One nation

Indivisible

With liberty and justice for all

A promise made and kept

By those who answered the call

Now hundreds of years later

The necessity of this has never been greater

Change and growth

But still following our same oath

What does it mean to be American?

It means to take action

To fight for what is right

And never let it fall out of sight

To be honorable and proud

Of the numerous figures who have vowed

To make America into a place

Where people can achieve the dreams they chase

We work and strive

To keep alive

The American values

And never confuse

What it means to truly be an American
