Summary

America is a great country, but with problems that need to be fixed. Luckily many Americans are aware of the problems in America like police brutality, high incarceration rates, low ill-maintained education system, etc.

America. The land of the Free. I’m not going to say that America is the best country, but I am going to say that it's a great country. America is a Great country, but with some problems. Luckily some of them are being solved like the unemployment rate( There is a graph at the bottom that shows the decrease of the unemployed percentage). I’m going to talk about problems that America have.

Education

The education system in America is an embarrassment compared to other countries. The U.S. ranks 17th overall in education performance. About 60 countries including the United States had 15 year olds take the 2015 Program for International Student Assessment. We ranked 39th in mathematics, 24th in science and reading according to the Pew Research Center. As you can see, us Americans need to make a tremendous bounceback in the education department.

High Incarceration Rates and Racism

America has the highest incarceration rates in the world with a prison population of 2,193,798 according to BBC News. Sadly there is a major race issue in the jail system. Prison Policy Initiative stated that the majority of the people imprisoned are black with white people being the least, I believe this is because of the racism in our country. You hear stories pretty much everyday about innocent black people being harrassed and sometimes killed by corrupt cops. Mappingpoliceviolence.org states the police have killed a total of 466 people so far in 2018., it then says that, “30% of black victims were unarmed in 2015 compared to 21% of white victims”.

Unemployment and Poverty

Despite the racism in our country, the unemployment rate in America has decreased tremendously since October 2009, which was 10%. Now in December of 2017 the unemployment rate dropped to 4.1%. Same with poverty in the U.S. In 2010 the poverty rate was 15.1% which is America's highest since 1993. Now the poverty rate decreased to 12.7%. It's still a pretty bad percentage but it shows that we as Americans are making tremendous progress.

Conclusion

In conclusion America is a great country, but with problems. The problems that America have are noticed by pretty much all Americans and many of them are fighting to demolish these problems. That’s what it means to be an American. It means to unite no matter how different our backgrounds and views are, so we make the country we call home amazing.
