Summary

The importance of the individual doing their civic duty as a member of the American creed.

Civic duty is the keystone of American democracy, upholding the founding principles of this great nation by ensuring that the citizens control their government, not the inverse.

Importance of voting may seem little to individual citizens, but every American’s voice is as loud as the next in elections.

Voice opinions loudly! The best way to make change is to work together, talk with others, and express ideas through action.

Ignorance is no excuse for laziness. Just because someone feels uninformed about politics, does not mean they should ignore their responsibility to their country. With roughly 90% of American adults using smartphones, it is easier than ever to learn about the American political structure and the candidates running for office.

Candidates for office may seem like untouchable and unrelatable "politicians," but do not hesitate to reach out to those running for local offices and ask them questions. They are likely to respond and may even be able to talk in person at one of their events. While this may not be the case for larger national elections, communities benefit from more engagement with their leaders.

Designate time to vote! It is worth skipping out on your usual routine or making time after a long day of work to cast your ballot.

Understand what the basic party platforms are to have a general idea of what an unknown candidate might stand for. While many people hear about presidential candidates through news and media coverage, they may not know who some of the figures in the congressional, state, and local elections are, so it is important to know what it means for them to be a Democrat or a Republican.

Treat voting like an opportunity, not a burden. It is of utmost importance to American democracy that its people continue to get out and vote. This great creed that has developed through generations of hardships will stand no chance if its people fail to partake in the unnecessarily trivial task that voting is made out to be.

You! Whoever may be reading this, go out and learn about yourself; about your beliefs and about your goals; and begin to think, if you have not already, about what you want America’s future to look like. After all, your voice is just as important as any of your fellow members of this great American creed.
