My American Creed
Summary
I live in a land where the potato is considered a delicacy, cheeseburgers and chicken tenders are ubiquitous, and everything is fried food. A country where the “American dream” is anything to which you set your mind. I have realized that my American Creed is opportunity. We as Americans have so much opportunity that so many around the world strive for. But only if we offer that opportunity to others. I was adopted from China when I was 2 years old. I never would have had the same opportunities that America has. It shows me how America contrasts with so many other countries in the amount of opportunities that are given to its citizens.
Firstly, education is one major factor that outlines our opportunities in this country. With access to thousands of universities, we are enabled with limitless ideas. If you want to be a doctor, teacher, engineer, or even an astronaut, you can become one. Even from a young age, we are told that we can achieve the “American Dream” through education. Whether through money or your dream job, you can achieve parts of the “American Dream”. Education opens a whole world of possibilities that you can obtain through America. But, we should do more for those who can not obtain these opportunities as easily. If we help people have access to a successful education, America can be prosperous and show a future that most Americans seek.
Secondly, America is known as the “melting pot”. With people coming from all over the world, we have the opportunity to learn and understand different cultures. It makes America unique to other countries around the world, where there is not as much diversity. With people who have different cultural backgrounds, America is a desirable place, open to everyone. However, Americans need to realize that we are not the only ones in this world. We should educate ourselves and be more welcoming to people who want the possibilities America has to offer. Because we all strive for a better life, whether migrating from another country or being born on American soil, we all want opportunities that are promised by the Constitution. We are all on the same side, the sooner people realize that we can work our way to a better way of life. If we become more accepting of people who are different, we have the opportunity to have new creative ideas and actions that make us become a stronger and smarter nation.
Lastly, we as Americans have the opportunity to do whatever we please. Pure freedom. The list is long: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, etc. With the protection of the 1st amendment, we have the option to live life however we choose. Nevertheless, America needs to learn that our freedoms can cause harm to others. We need to curb them because they could stop the opportunities of many. Take, for example, school shootings. We have the freedom to bear arms, but we need to understand that in the wrong hands, it can be detrimental. America has to recognize that while we love our freedoms, we need to add boundaries to some of them. Freedom creates opportunity for many citizens throughout the nation and if we find a balance between freedom and regulation, we can have the choice to create a better future.
To conclude, America has so much to offer. Americans have limitless opportunities in the way they live their lives. Not only does America offer opportunity, but America also has the opportunity to change its ways for the better as well. So, I stand strong on opportunity as my American creed.
