How does your family & community history connect to your American creed?

What is the American Dream? Is it buying a house or a car? Owning land? The American Dream can be all of that and more. The American Dream was something that heavily influenced the waves of immigration that began many years ago. People came to America in search of better jobs, better housing, and a better life for themselves and their families. There are very few people who can say that they don't have someone in their bloodline and heritage that immigrated into this country in search of that American Dream life. 

America is a melting pot. On both sides of my family, I have had immigrants. My great grandma's family from my moms side is from Lesvos, Greece. In 1916 they traveled here, to America. My great grandma's older brother, Gus, ended up being born on a Greek Ocean Liner coming to America. This was right during World War 1. My great grandma's family had no money; they were completely poor. My great grandma is a prime example of the American Dream. From having no money, to living in nyc almost her whole life raising kids, my great grandma is rich in life.

My great grandpa on my dads side is from Avezzano, Italy. In Italy, they worked on a farm and had very little possessions. When he was 6 years old, his family migrated to America in hopes of the American Dream. From coming from nothing, they built a great name for themselves. They created DiBenedetto Fine Homes, their American Dream. My family did not have this opportunity in Italy. They came to America to restart and create a better life for themselves and their family.

In every state, in every city, and even in every neighborhood, diversity surrounds us. Diversity has been one of the most important parts of America's past, present, and future, and it will continue to be that way. The melting pot of America, and those who were brave enough to come here in search of that new life are the strongest of us all.
