Michael Hanselman's idea of American Creed. 1st Block

My American Creed is the freedom to choose whatever you want to be because of the equality and free economy.

The United States makes it a point to try to make it so anyone can be whatever they want. In many countries throughout the world the rights of people are being oppressed. In the Islamic Republic of Iran women do not have the same rights as men. For example, they have to wear head coverings out in public, have a harder time leaving the country, picking where to live and being the head of the household. Not only are women oppressed throughout the world but LGBT people are as well. In Uganda, same sex sexual activity is banned for men and women. Being gay in Uganda can result in 20 years of prison or the death penalty. Finally, in South Africa there was an Apartheid until the 1990s as there was forced removal and relocation of blacks to move them into communities under their own race. The hostilities of different races is still very strong today in South Africa and there is still De-Facto segregation. However in the United States everyone is technically equal under the law. Title IX in the United States was a landmark piece of legislation as it banned discrimination under the basis of sex in any educational program. Also, as of 2015 gay marriage in America is legal in all 50 states. In America racism is still a massive issue and De-Facto segregation is still alive. But, there are policies such as affirmative action that are trying to give previously underprivileged minorities a better chance. Overall, despite Americans shortcomings in equality it's better than most countries and is continuing to get better.

In America despite wherever you come from you have the opportunity to make it big and that is special. Despite peoples opinions on Illegal Immigration last year in 2023, 3.2 million undocumented Immigrants entered the country. They obviously entered for a better life and the biggest reason for that is that you can come from nothing and end up successful. There is a reason the term “American Dream” exists, no other country has a saying like that, only the USA. Throughout the world there are many countries that don’t have the same opportunities as the US such as Cuba, China and North Korea. These countries all have something in common and that is that they are communist. The worst thing about these countries is that they have a sort of “Big Brother” eye on people. For example China has a social credit system and in that it gives you a value on how much they believe that you help their country. However if you live in the United States you don’t have to worry about the Government always spying on you. In the United States Constitution there are very important freedoms outlayed such as speech, freedom of religion, protections against cruel punishment and the right for everyone over 18 to vote. With these freedoms, everyone has the ability to be whoever they want to be and do what they want to do without the fear that the government isn’t trying to control them.

All in all, even though America has a lot of issues right now the core values of everyone being equal and can be what they want to be still make this country great.
