My American Creed
Summary
The story of my family, and their success in America, shows that anyone can achieve the American dream with hard work and dedication. My great-grandfather was young when he decided to travel to America in the 1920's; Germany was experiencing an economic depression like never before, and the amount of social and political unrest happening with changing governments was getting out of hand. He realized he needed to escape the turmoil that his country was facing and start a new life. He was in his mid-20's when he left for the United States, and arrived with very little money; it was a fresh start nonetheless. At this time, though, the Great Depression spread to America, and he found himself struggling once more. He found a job at a steel factory, and worked long, hard hours to save up money. During this time he met his future wife, and my great-grandmother. Together they bought a house and started a family - as the depression began to fade and World War II ended, they found that they had a beautiful home, and a family which they could support comfortably. They started from nothing, and built a life out of dust so that my grandparents, my parents, and eventually I could have a life which I am grateful for everyday. Were it not for their bravery and sacrifices, I would never have been born, and would never subsequently be blessed with everything I have been given.
