How does your family & community history connect to your American creed?
Summary
I believe that with hard work, anything can be done. My father showed me this through the story of his life. My father, Matthew Ullom was born in Seoul, South Korea, where he was left and found in an alleyway. From there, he was placed into a home where he was then adopted by a couple from America, where he then moved to. Once in South Carolina, he was introduced to his other three white siblings. And although this couple had taken him up for adoption, they belittled my father and treated him as if he was lesser his siblings every day. He faced cruel punishments from his parents and a harsh time growing up in the South as the only Asian in his school district. This included racist comments and slurs each day, being excluded and having a hard time making any friends. He faced challenges revolving around racism each day and was treated poorly for his whole childhood until he moved to Bay for his senior year of highschool. Here, he was happier at school here although he still faced troubles at home. Despite this, he persevered through his hardships, graduated, and worked each and every day to achieve his goals. Regardless of not attending culinary school, my father was able to work his way to achieve his very own restaurant. He then went on to successfully open two more restaurants, along with a bakery. His hard work and grit allowed him to build a life out of one that someone tried to end. Not only that but he continues to work to this day. Although he is only maintaining one restaurant at the moment, he is extremely successful and his hard work is extremely admirable. Through the use of hard work and dedication to make a better life for himself, he was able to provide the best life he can for me and my siblings as well because he didn’t have that growing up.
